Report: Tesla China rehires sales staff amid Q2 2024 delivery push

A recent report from China indicated that Tesla is currently looking to rehire some employees who were affected by the company’s latest round of headcount cuts. These efforts come amid Tesla China’s efforts to offer as many vehicles as possible to customers before the end of the second quarter of 2024.

Citing several former Tesla China employees, local media outlet Jiemian noted that most of the people the company is looking to rehire are from the sales and service team. However, this is said to be a major challenge as some former Tesla China employees have already been hired by rival electric vehicle manufacturers such as Nio’s Onvo brand.

Tesla’s latest round of layoffs has been widespread, with recent reports indicating that the company has let go of about 14% of its total global headcount. CEO Elon Musk noted that the cuts were necessary for Tesla to be able to become a lean, efficient company capable of reaching new heights. Musk has big plans for Tesla in the coming years, with the CEO noting during the 2024 Cyber Roundup that Tesla isn’t just entering another chapter, it’s starting a whole new book.

In China, most employees affected by layoffs were from sales and service teams. As mentioned in the CNEV Post report, Tesla’s physical stores in China typically have between eight and nine employees. After the layoffs, some Tesla China stores reportedly kept only five or six people, according to former Tesla employees who shared their thoughts with Jimian.

Sentiments within Tesla China have reportedly been very optimistic recently, especially since Senior Vice President Tom Zhu has returned to China. According to the post, Zhu has been personally visiting Tesla stores in China, and his presence is said to have boosted morale among the company’s employees. Tesla China seems to be very busy lately, as hinted at by the 17,500 new vehicle registrations the electric automaker saw in the week ending June 23, 2024.
