NEW CANAAN, Conn. — The New Canaan Fire Department is reminding residents to properly use extension cords and surge protectors in a new fire safety video.
According to the city’s website, New Canaan Fire Chief Albie Bassett has partnered with the Connecticut Association of Fire Chiefs to produce new public service videos on “preventing fires through the proper use of frequently used extension cords and surge protectors in residential and commercial buildings.”
The video production is in line with the department’s mission to save lives through public education and reduce the number of structure fires in New Canaan to zero, according to the city.
The video features New Canaan firefighters as spokespersons.
Bassett said firefighters and the city’s fire chief have seen numerous high-risk situations caused by misused extension cords in homes and commercial properties, often in older homes with smaller electrical services.
The National Fire Protection Association reports that fires started by failure of electrical distribution and lighting equipment are the leading cause of fire damage to residential properties in the country, according to the city.
