Geely Auto Group has launched a new model in its Galaxy range, the E5, a compact SUV, which will also be available in overseas markets.

China’s Geely launched its all-electric SUV Galaxy E5 with a range of 440 kilometers and a starting price of 112,800 yuan ($15,750) at a launch event in Guiyang, southwest China’s Guizhou Province, yesterday.

The compact SUV will target the global market, with right-hand drive models available in addition to the left-hand drive model available in China.

The Geely Galaxy E5 is available in five versions in China with prices starting from 112,800 yuan, 122,800 yuan, 128,800 yuan, 138,800 yuan and 148,800 yuan respectively.

The model is 4,615 mm long, 1,901 mm wide and 1,670 mm high, and the wheelbase is 2,750 mm.

Its five versions have the same powertrain with an engine producing 160 kW of maximum power and 320 Nm of maximum torque, capable of accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.9 seconds.

The two less expensive versions rely on a 49.52 kWh battery and offer a CLTC range of 440 km, while the other three versions have a 60.22 kWh battery and offer a CLTC range of 530 km.

The battery is Geely’s Aegis Short Blade battery, which was unveiled on June 27, and the Galaxy E5 is the first model to be powered by a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) chemistry-based power battery cell.

Geely said in June that the battery cell’s energy density is 192 Wh/kg and its cycle life is up to 3,500 cycles, equivalent to driving 1 million kilometers with little impact on range.

Consumers who pre-order the Galaxy E5 before October 1 can enjoy a discount of CNY 3,000, available on all five versions.

One of the main competitors to the Geely Galaxy E5 is the Yuan Plus model from BYD (HKG: 1211, OTCMKTS: BYDDY), which is currently priced from CNY119,800 to CNY147,800, with CLTC range options of 430km and 510km.

Galaxy is the new product range launched by Geely on February 23, 2023, targeting the plug-in hybrid and pure electric vehicle markets.

China’s Geely said it will launch a total of seven models in its Galaxy range by 2025, including four plug-in hybrid models in the L series and three pure electric models in the E series, during a launch event for the new product lineup.

The Galaxy L7 SUV and Galaxy L6 sedan were launched in 2023, both of which are hybrid models. On January 5 this year, the all-electric Galaxy E8 sedan was launched.

According to figures released by Geely earlier this month, the Galaxy range sold 16,704 vehicles in July, up 66.08% year-on-year and up 4.56% from June.
