Ion Storage Systems, a US manufacturer of solid-state batteries, will receive $20 million from the US Department of Energy’s Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E) program (SCALEUP) to fund critical developments in pioneering energy technologies with untapped potential.
Ion was one of four companies to receive SCALEUP funding in 2024 as part of the program’s $63.5 million budget. The program’s goal is to help ARPA-E-funded technologies move from proof-of-concept prototypes to scalable, commercially viable versions. ARPA-E’s SCALEUP funding and corporate partnerships will enable Ion to expand its manufacturing facilities in the United States.
The funding comes as part of a three-year, $40 million partnership with French ceramics, glass and materials company Saint-Gobain and U.S. semiconductor process and quality control specialist KLA to accelerate commercialization of Ion’s anode-free solid-state battery. ARPA-E will be funded by an additional $20 million in private equity, bringing the total program size to $40 million.
“Accelerating the widespread adoption of electric vehicles requires increased driving range, reduced costs, and improved safety. Ion Storage Systems has focused on working toward these goals through the previous ARPA-E program, and now, through SCALEUP, the company will accelerate the domestic manufacturing of high-density solid-state lithium metal batteries, based on its proprietary ceramic electrolyte manufacturing technology,” said Evelyn Wang, Director of ARPA-E.
