With 1,400 kW of power and a 0-100 km/h time of 1.81 seconds, the Rimac Nevera is certainly not an unsportsmanlike electric car. However, Rimac Automobili has deliberately developed the car as a “super GT” – with the goal of being able to set a record lap of the Nürburgring-Nordschleife in one moment and then embark on a 1,000-kilometre road trip across the continent shortly after. With the space and comfort to match inside.
“However, we continue to develop the car relentlessly with customer wishes in mind,” explains Rimac CEO and founder Mate Rimac. “Many customers were looking for a car that would further emphasize the Nevera’s cornering stability and make the most of all the advanced technologies on board. We are responding to these requests with the Nevera R.”
According to the company’s president, the R model will retain the Nevera’s characteristics, “but it will be lighter, faster and more focused.” The motor’s power has been increased to 1,571 kW, the battery system has been further developed to improve performance, and Rimac’s torque vectoring all-wheel drive (R-AWTV) system has been improved. New brakes have also been installed to prepare the Nevera R for fast cornering.
The R version’s design has only been slightly improved, but the large fixed rear wing and large diffuser at the rear are impressive. The “aggressive aerodynamic package” (quote from the press release) aims to increase downforce by 15 percent and aerodynamic efficiency by 10 percent. In addition, new Cup 2 tires from Michelin are fitted, which aim to improve lateral stability and the tendency to oversteer when entering corners.
Preliminary result: At the Nardò circuit in Italy, the Nevera R was 3.8 seconds faster than the “base model,” if we can call the million-euro Nevera that. The Nevera R has yet to make its debut on the Nürburgring, where the Nevera set a lap time of 7:05:298 minutes last August.
Although the R is optimized for cornering, it is slightly faster than the Nevera on straight roads: from a standing start, it should reach the 300 km/h mark in 8.66 seconds. The Nevera takes a little longer at 9.22 seconds. Incidentally, the top speed outside the factory is 350 km/h. As with the Nevera, the R is only allowed to reach 412 km/h under manufacturer supervision.
