More than a year after traditional automakers announced the switch from CCS charging to Tesla’s North American Charging Standard (NACS), GM EV customers are finally able to purchase a certified adapter and get access to hundreds of thousands of Tesla chargers.
Today’s news has been long anticipated for GM electric vehicle drivers. It’s another huge step in the American auto industry’s embrace of a truly universal charging socket.
In June 2023, GM was one of the first OEMs to announce the switch from Tesla’s CCS to NACS plug. It stated that future BEV models will feature the plug natively, and existing BEVs will be able to access the charging network via an adapter.
Since then, we’ve seen nearly every automaker adopt NACS and start getting Tesla-certified adapters, including Ford, Hyundai, BMW, and Lucid Motors, to name a few.
US charging networks like ChargePoint have also begun rolling out solutions to support EVs of all makes and models, helping to increase the diversity of local networks and alleviate some of the stress EV drivers currently face when they need to charge and don’t have the right plug or aren’t certified to access a specific charging network.
While we wait for future GM models with built-in Tesla NACS plugs, the American automaker has begun selling a certified adapter that gives electric vehicle drivers instant access to many of the Level 2 and DC fast chargers on Tesla’s existing network.
GM-Approved Tesla NACS Adapter Now Available for $225
According to a statement issued today by General Motors, its certified NACS adapter is now available for sale through GM’s vehicle brand apps, providing these drivers with access to Tesla’s Supercharger network – one of the largest and most reliable networks in the United States today.
The NACS switch gives GM customers access to nearly 232,000 public chargers, including 17,800 Tesla Superchargers. GM Energy Vice President Wade Schaefer said:
GM’s ongoing efforts to help accelerate the expansion of public EV charging infrastructure are integral to our commitment to an all-electric future. Enabling access to more public fast chargers is another way GM is focused on further improving the customer experience and making the transition to electric more seamless.
According to GM, electric vehicle drivers across its portfolio of brands will be able to purchase the Tesla adapter through their own apps for $225. They can then use the same app to locate the nearest available Tesla charging stations, check the station status, start charging and pay for their session.
GM says every Tesla inverter is designed to ensure customers can charge their electric vehicles at any charger that meets the North American charging standard. The automaker is using multiple suppliers to produce them to ensure everyone who wants one can get one.
The automaker says the adapters will begin rolling out in the U.S. immediately, followed by Canada later this year. You can learn more here.
