In 2020, MG was the first company to bring affordable electric vehicles to the Australian market with the introduction of the ZS EV, the electric variant of an already popular internal combustion engine car.
Last year, the company stepped things up a notch with the hugely successful MG4 electric hatchback. Now it appears that a larger MG4-like SUV has been spotted testing in Victoria.
Andrew M spotted the camouflaged SUV in the Gippsland tourist town of Lakes Entrance and shared the photos on the Electric Vehicles for Australia Facebook group.
This car appears to be the MG S5, which was previously reported CNC As a model it is heading to overseas markets outside China.
From the front, the lights under the hood appear in the shape of an MG4, along with the front bumper. The car’s glass roof can also be seen in the parked evaluation car.
In terms of size, the MG S5 is 4,476 mm long, which is longer than the current MG ZS EV, which is 4,314 mm.
All models are expected to have a 125 kW rear-mounted motor fed by a lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) battery pack supplied by CATL and SAIC.
Against the backdrop of this vision, one electric car enthusiast said: “I hope this comes out sooner rather than later.” I want to buy before the end of the year and this would be perfect.
Looking at the registration of the spotted MG S5, it is currently registered in New South Wales and has the description ‘ES34 Evaluation Vehicle’ in white. The curb weight of the car is also 1780 kg.
The MG brand in Australia has gone from strength to strength on the electric vehicle front. In 2024, she drove the MG4 electric hatchback The first car from MG to use its Modular Scalable Platform (MSP) with a skateboard-like design and rear-wheel drive paired with a thinner battery design.
This model is available on the market with three battery configurations, providing drivers with more options and helping it sell more than 3,300 electric cars so far in 2024.
In August, MG also set a new standard in Australia by offering an industry-leading 10-year or 250,000km warranty across its entire range, including EV models. This is higher than the 7-year warranty the company previously offered on its cars delivered to Australia.
It’s great to see MG launching another model into the Australian market on the back of the MG4’s sales success. More options on the market will provide options for drivers making the switch from an ICE vehicle.
However, electric cars with other body types will also be welcomed by those looking for smaller hatchbacks and wagons like those offered in the European market.
We look forward to covering any updates to this model and more. Find all available EV options on our website EV Models Page And the latest Sales data here.
