Pricing for MG’s new electric SUV starts at less than AU$22,000 in China

MG’s new electric SUV Spotted being evaluated for Australia last month – It promises to set a new pricing standard after officially launching in its home market of China.

According to reports from CNCThe ES5, which is 4.48 meters long, will be priced at less than AU$21,300 in China, which is very convincing given the features of this electric car.

This includes a new battery pack, which the brand’s parent company, SAIC, claims is the world’s thinnest, at just 110mm thick. The battery pack was DIt was developed by both CATL and SAIC and features lithium iron phosphate (LFP) chemistry.

Two battery packs are available, with the smaller pack having a capacity of 49.1 kWh and the larger pack having a capacity of 62.2 kWh. These packages provide a CLTC range of 425 – 525 km. This is likely to be between 350 and 450 kilometers on the more locally used WLTP cycle.

The MG ES5 comes with a single rear-mounted motor, delivering up to 125 kilowatts of power. This helps this small SUV accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in about 8 seconds. This makes it slightly slower than the currently available MG4 electric hatchback.

Moving inside, the highlight is the upgraded infotainment system, which has been increased to 15.6 inches compared to the 10.25-inch screen found in the MG4.

The number of physical buttons has also been reduced, giving the interior a minimalist overall look.

The new MG is expected to go on sale in China next week, with exports likely to begin in 2025.

And since this car was recently spotted testing in Victoria, it seems like it’s on track for local announcements in the coming months as well.

This car, like the MG4, will carry an industry-leading 10-year warranty, giving more people the confidence to choose an electric car over an ICE model.

Besides, if the price is likely to fall below $40,000, the EV sales charts are bound to rise fairly quickly after launch.
