The innovative eco-friendly connection is designed to reduce power loss providing up to 90% greater power transfer.

Smiths Interconnect, a leading provider of technologically differentiated electronic components, subsystems and microwave, optical and radio frequency products, today announced the introduction of Hypertac Green ConnectTM, a new high-power lead- and beryllium-free interconnect technology, to its established portfolio of highly reliable interconnect technologies for demanding applications. .

At a time when the world is witnessing a massive transformation on a scale not seen in a century – the transition from fossil fuel engines to electric power – the importance of batteries has risen to the forefront of design across a wide range of systems. This includes its critical role in applications including rail transportation, defence, commercial buses, mining operations, boating and ports.

One critical aspect that unites all these diverse applications is the method of interconnection. Nowadays, interconnection solutions on the market suffer from significant power losses due to high connection resistance.

In response to this challenge, Smiths Interconnect proudly introduces an advanced design of the original over-shaped contact that aims to solve the problem of power loss.

This advanced solution ensures optimal use of every kilowatt-hour of energy stored in the battery, enhancing overall efficiency and performance.

Designed specifically for the battery systems market and related applications, this redundant contact design provides a robust connection capable of efficiently handling continuous currents up to 500A.

By facilitating efficient and long-lasting energy transfer, this solution promises to revolutionize the way energy is managed and used in various applications across industries.

The lower contact resistance of Hypertac Green ConnectTM technology reduces heat build-up allowing contacts to handle greater current in smaller contact groups without negatively impacting temperature rise.

This technology uses an array of wires with plugs, at right angles to form a flexible, conductive hyperboloid sheath. When the mating pin enters the socket, the housing expands around it, providing many lines of electrical contact with the mating pin, as opposed to a few “high spots” on a conventional contact.

The elimination of beryllium and lead from Hypertac Green ConnectTM also provides game-changing operational and environmental benefits. Both beryllium and lead require significant materials compliance management. Certifications of compliance, declarations of meeting threshold limits, or having to request, manage, and monitor exemptions are time consuming and expensive. Complete removal of these materials reduces extensive compliance documentation requirements. But more importantly, removing these materials improves the safety of our manufacturing process and our customers, since materials of concern are completely removed from our processes and ultimately eliminating the costly need for environmentally safe disposal.

Finally, thanks to the optimized crimped design of the plug, an increased contact area is created between the contact body and the multi-strand cable, which ultimately contributes to unparalleled low contact resistance.

“To provide an innovative solution to the growing battery systems market including high-voltage packs for electric mobility, we have developed an innovative connection technology specifically designed to deliver unparalleled performance by minimizing power loss,” says Mark Kelleher, Vice President and General Manager of Connectors. Smiths Interconnect business unit. “I am delighted to bring to the market this advanced solution that combines our proven original hyperboloid technology with the latest environmentally friendly requirements.”

Hypertac Green ConnectTM lead- and beryllium-free technology provides sustainable, premium connectivity solutions thanks to:

High current carrying capacity (300A with temperature rise < 50°C) capable of transmitting up to 90% more power at 500A boost mode even after 10,000 I/P cycles compared to other technologies. Unparalleled ultra-bright socket designed to IEC62196 and SAE J1772 standards Low contact resistance from 25 μΩ (40 μΩ after aging) up to 40,000 mating cycles and low insertion and extraction force. An improved socket crimp design (patent pending) provides increased contact area between the contact body and the multi-strand cable, ensuring unparalleled low contact resistance. Fully RoHS and REACH compliant materials with no exceptions: No SVHC copper or beryllium copper is used.
