Electric vehicles will account for 9 out of 10 new passenger car sales in Norway in 2024

Although new car sales in Norway barely exceeded the numbers seen in 2023, electric cars continued to dominate, accounting for 89 percent of all new passenger car sales throughout 2024.

New figures published by Opplysningsrådet für veitrafikken (OFV), Norway’s road traffic information board, earlier this month revealed that new passenger car sales in 2024 amounted to 128,691, just 1.4 percent higher than in 2023.

However, among them, 114,400 are electric cars, or about 88.9 percent, compared to 82.4 percent in 2023.

It is important to note that these figures are for fully electric cars, with plug-in hybrids and plug-in hybrids separately reported to account for 5.3 percent and 2.7 percent of all new passenger car sales in Norway for 2024.

Thus, the combination of all electric vehicles accounts for 96.9 percent of all new vehicle sales.

This compares favorably with 2023, when all new electric passenger cars accounted for 96.3 percent of total sales. Specifically, sales of plug-in hybrids were 7.9 percent in 2023, but only 2.7 percent in 2024, while base hybrid sales fell slightly from 6 percent to 5.3 percent.

However, either way, it seems as if fully electric cars are eating into the numbers of hybrid cars.

Unsurprisingly, American electric car company Tesla remains the most preferred car brand, with the Model Y selling 16,858 units in 2024, representing 13.1 percent. This was followed by the Tesla Model 3, Volvo EX30, Volkswagen ID.4, and Toyota bZ4X.

Tesla therefore remained the leading brand in Norway, with a total of 24,259 models sold in 2024, representing 18.9 percent of all new passenger cars sold. However, this is down from 20 percent, highlighting the growth of other major brands such as Volkswagen, Toyota and Volvo.
