General Motors (GM) is facing another recall of its Chevrolet Bolt electric vehicle (EV), the fourth such recall of the vehicle due to potential fire hazards.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has launched a new recall for the Chevy Bolt EV and EUV, affecting 107 units previously repaired under recall 21V-650. The current recall includes 2020 through 2022 Bolt EV units, as well as 2022 Bolt EUV units, on which the agency says the diagnostic software installation may have failed in the latest round of repairs.
“If the NHTSA Recall 21V650 recall remediation program is not installed properly, the vehicle may fail to identify defective battery modules requiring replacement, increasing the risk of a potential vehicle fire,” NHTSA wrote in its recall report, which is No. 24V. -812.
The NHTSA also instructed Bolt owners to keep their cars at a 90 percent charge level, charge them more regularly and avoid letting them reach a range of less than 70 miles. Additionally, the agency says owners should park their cars outside after charging and avoid parking their cars indoors overnight.

GM previously launched three more recalls of the Chevy Bolt and Bolt EUV due to fire risks, though those apply to about 142,000 units compared to the small number included in the current recall. The company was also forced to halt production of the Chevy Bolt in 2021, and later faced a class-action lawsuit over the issue and went on to settle the case earlier this year.
Although GM had previously planned to discontinue production of the Chevy Bolt, the automaker has launched a $390 million investment in a Kansas production facility for the next generation of Bolt EVs. Originally mocked in GM’s contract with the United Auto Workers (UAW) during negotiations and strikes last year, the next-gen Bolt is expected to significantly cut battery costs.
