ROBUS recently undertook a difficult upgrade to its DALI lighting

It was lights, camera and action (or lights, lights, lights) for the ROBUS team as they recently undertook a challenging DALI lighting upgrade for the largest TV broadcaster in the Slovak Republic. Here we find out how this has already reduced energy costs by 55%.

When JOJ TV in Bratislava required an extensive lighting upgrade, ROBUS was ready to provide the service. The building in question was the production area of the largest television broadcaster in the Slovak Republic.

What’s particularly interesting about a TV studio from a lighting design perspective is that it is a space where people rely heavily on visual performance, making perfect lighting with excellent color rendition essential.

Furthermore, there were other practical factors to consider for the project, such as energy saving, integrated lighting control, and emergency lighting systems.

Old lighting system outside, new energy efficient desk inside

The client found themselves in a common situation – stuck with an outdated lighting system that was not only outdated, but also inefficient. This has led to high maintenance costs, excessive glare, and even raised some safety concerns. As a result, the TV JOJ team needed a brighter and more cost-effective solution.

To meet the challenge, ROBUS teamed up with a long-standing partner wholesaler in the region and BKP ELEKTRO, a contractor who recommended ROBUS as a brand known for offering great quality at a fair price.

Plan of attack

ROBUS provided a DALI-controlled lighting system that not only enhanced performance and efficiency, but when combined with the HORIZON LED strip, provided the sleek, modern aesthetic the client was seeking.

The following list of products has been recommended, based on the different areas of the building that require upgraded lighting:

– 85 HORIZON UGR<19 WITH DALI

– 36 HORIZON WITHOUT DALI (for production areas)

– 126 Horizon CCT3

– 24 Swiss emergency lights

Reduce glare in office environments

TV JOJ prioritized installing UGR lighting in its offices, in line with the ROBUS recommendation for task-oriented spaces.

Glare is a notorious problem in work and school environments, leading to visual fatigue, headaches, decreased productivity, light sensitivity, and even poor vision over time.

This is why the Unified Glare Rating (UGR) is used by lighting designers as an objective measure of glare, enabling the production of improved lighting products and designs.

ROBUS offers a range of low-glare products well suited for this application.

For TV JOJ, the company installed the stylish (and therefore always TV-ready) HORIZON LED panel, designed to provide exceptionally low UGR<19 glare, which was immediately noticeable in the building's corridors. In areas where high levels of lighting are required, the CCT3 version is installed instead.

ICEL approved emergency lighting

Emergency lighting also had to be updated as part of the project, to meet modern safety standards. ROBUS recommended the use of the Swiss exit code, which is now ICEL certified. This product offers a viewing distance of up to 26 metres, offers five alternative installation methods and features LIFEPO4 battery technology with three-hour emergency discharge.

Upgrade to DALI with custom conversions

Conversion transforms a standard lighting fixture by modifying it to improve functionality.

ROBUS’ custom conversion section can do this for many applications, such as incorporating a battery pack for emergency use, mounting a microwave sensor for increased power efficiency, or even providing customizations such as adding additional cable lengths, connectors, and pre-wires.

The team was able to customize several HORIZON fixtures for the Digital Addressable Lighting Interface (DALI), enhancing cost effectiveness and control efficiency. DALI simplifies the process of measuring and tracking the energy consumption of each lamp, reducing the time required for maintenance and replacement while allowing precise control of each fixture.

Noticeable reduction in costs

The result of this comprehensive project was a custom, energy-efficient lighting solution for JOJ TV – designed to reduce glare and provide customizable settings tailored to meet the diverse needs of studio departments.

Employees noticed a clear improvement in their daily work, particularly appreciating the low-glare environment. With an incredible 55% energy savings achieved through the redesign, it’s safe to say: This is it!
