The Kandi 4P golf cart is the neighborhood cart of NFL fans’ dreams

Kandi has become somewhat well-known in the United States for its work-focused electric golf carts and UTVs, but the company has teamed up with Lowe’s and the NFL on something a little more fun: the Kandi 4P electric golf cart. Sold through Lowe’s with official NFL team livery, this four-seater is aimed less at driveways and more at cul-de-sacs, grocery runs, and game-day tailgates. I spent some time with the Miami Dolphins’ 4P in South Florida to see what they can really do.

Specifications, power and hardware

Despite the “golf cart” tag, the Kandi 4P is designed more like a small road-going NEV. Power comes from a 5-kilowatt motor and a large 48V 150Ah lithium iron phosphate battery (about 7.2 kWh), giving it plenty of speed for neighborhood speeds of around 20 mph and a lot more range than you’d expect from something this size. In practice, it just absorbs energy; I did several days of errands and trips before I thought about plugging it in.

Shipping is clear and straightforward. The cart uses a J1772 input, so you can plug it into a regular 120V wall outlet using the included cord or use a typical home EV charger if you already have one. It’s overkill for a golf cart, but in a good way.

Underneath, you’ll find a single-suspension suspension up front, rack-and-pinion steering, and four-wheel hydraulic disc brakes. There’s also a 2-inch tow hitch rated for 500 pounds of trailer weight and an anchor point up front if you really want to install a winch.

Features and practicality

Inside, the Kandi 4P looks more like a small electric car than a basic wagon. There’s a very large touchscreen with multiple information pages for speed, battery, and system status (and also displays the backup camera). An NFC device handles the “main” duties, and you get convenient controls for forward, neutral and reverse, plus hazards, lighting and a tilt steering column with stalk-mounted turn signals and horn.

The seats are well upholstered and really comfortable, with DOT seat belts front and rear, cup holders everywhere, passenger rails, and a built-in Bluetooth speaker for roll-on playlists or tailgate jingles. The folding windshield can be cracked for a bit of a breeze or propped completely open on the gas struts, and the hardtop extends enough to keep you fairly dry in the rain. I should know – I’ve been out driving in multiple rainstorms!

Storage is better than you’d expect: a small glove box, a trunk, and even a front trunk. Between those things and the flat floor, we were able to do a full grocery run — though we should have planned our bag strategy a little better. We ended up strapping a week’s worth of grocery bags into the back seats, but a sink in the back would provide better storage space for those types of larger stores.

Is it worth it?

Priced at $9,999 through Lowe’s with whatever NFL team colors you prefer, the Kandi 4P isn’t cheap in absolute terms, but it’s in the mix for modern, well-equipped neighborhood wagons. High-end golf carts can easily go for $14,000-$15,000 these days, and they don’t always offer a 7+ kWh LiFePO4 pack, disc brakes all around, J1772 charging, and all the street legal parts in one package. Add in the official colors and logos of an NFL team and you basically have a mobile phone that can serve as a pristine second car replacement for many households.

No, it’s not as safe as a full-size car – there are no airbags or crumple zones here. But it has seat belts and real lights, and encourages a more aware and less “invincible” mentality behind the wheel. For people who live in communities with 25-30 mph street speeds, these types of vehicles make a lot of sense: lower purchase cost, significantly lower energy use, no tailpipe emissions, less road and tire wear, and more smiles per mile.

Compared to an e-bike, the Kandi 4P excels in weather protection and ridership. Compared to a second car, it wins in terms of cost, efficiency and enjoyment. And if you’re the type of person who wants to go to the grocery store or the stadium in an all-electric wagon full of the team, this thing totally gets the job done.
