The government recently announced the expansion of the workplace charging system to include schools and state-funded educational institutions. Each organization will be able to claim a discount of up to a maximum of 75% of the cost of purchasing and installing the charging point up to a maximum of:
£2,500 per socket for 40 sockets across the site
Currently, the goal of the government, including educational institutions, is to support schools to become greener. Working towards their commitment to reach net zero by 2050 and reduce carbon emissions from public buildings by 50% by 2032. The Department for Education recently confirmed that it will soon release its decarbonisation roadmap, with schools expected to take the lead on sustainability. The overall aim of the scheme is to accelerate the uptake of electric charging points for state-funded educational institutions.
To be eligible for the workplace charging scheme, state-funded educational institutions must be in England, Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland. If the establishment is located in the Channel Islands or the Isle of Man, it is not eligible.
The institution must have:
A current or future need to charge an electric vehicle for off-street parking facilities that are clearly connected to your premises (the parking lot may be used by customers, guests, visitors, staff or others) and a site survey has been carried out by an approved installer, such as Black Pear Electrical which has confirmed that your location can support EV charging has not applied for a grant for the same charging point under the Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Grant for Employees and Fleets or any other grant scheme, has the authority to apply for a workplace charging scheme on behalf of your organisation.
Academy Funds can apply for a maximum of 40 sockets per organization within an Academy Fund.
Independent schools cannot claim this extended grant, however they can apply for the standard WCS grant of £350 per socket.
If charging points are to be used to generate revenue, organizations must ensure they comply with the Public Charge Points Regulations 2023
