Electrical apprentices across the country will gain broader access to fire, electrical and life safety codes through a new agreement between the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and Independent Electrical Contractors (IEC). The partnership will make NFPA LiNK, the association’s digital platform for more than 300 codes and standards — including the National Electrical Code — available across 53 IEC training campuses and affiliated chapters.

With support from American Technical Publishers, IEC’s training partner, NFPA LiNK will be integrated into IEC’s content management system and will be offered at no additional cost to the more than 20,000 trainees the organization trains each year. The platform provides real-time code updates, expert feedback, visual aids, and interactive tools aimed at supporting classroom teaching and on-the-job learning.

The agreement gives trainees and trainers “the tools they need to learn and apply safety knowledge in real-world environments,” said Kyle Spencer, director of NFPA LiNK. The integration enhances the association’s training programs by bringing current safety information “directly into the classroom and the field,” said Amy Biedenharn, executive director of the IEC.

IEC represents more than 4,100 member companies nationwide. The two organizations said that the cooperation supports ongoing efforts to enhance safety education and prepare the electrical workforce to meet the challenges of the evolving industry.

NFPA 70B is the standard for electrical equipment maintenance. This applies to equipment installed in accordance with NFPA 70 (NEC) standards (NFPA 70B 1.3) and addresses preventive maintenance (1.1). It does not cover consumer appliances intended primarily for the home (1.3.2).

For the typical maintenance technician, having a copy of this standard is not necessary. This is because the typical maintenance technician undergoes training, uses the procedures he writes, and performs specific maintenance tasks at intervals specified by the people for whom this standard was written.

For others, having a copy of this standard is essential. Maintenance planners, maintenance managers, maintenance engineers and CMMS managers need to know this standard. They should know this just as a master NEC electrician would be expected to know. This is true whether they are performing internal maintenance, contract maintenance, or working for specialized companies such as electrical testing companies.

The initial chapters are very short. Then you get to a series of chapters on testing, followed by Chapter Nine. This chapter talks about maintenance periods. The main feature of Chapter 9 is Table 9.2.2. This table contains approximately 4 full pages. To use it, you search for the type of asset you’re trying to hold (located in the Product column, sorted alphabetically). You then choose the scope of work from a list that may vary from just one job (e.g., thermal imaging) to several (e.g., visual inspection, mechanical service, electrical testing, etc.). Each will have an associated time interval. The mechanical maintenance interval for one product may differ from the mechanical maintenance interval for another product.

Chapter Ten relates to dangerous sites. Then, starting with Chapter 11, each chapter presents requirements for a specific type of asset (e.g., power and distribution transformers, buses, lighting, wiring equipment, etc.). This series ends with Chapter 36, Stationary Backup Batteries. Chapters 37 and 38 are “reserved” for instrument converters and control power converters, respectively.

This is followed by 13 appendices, from Appendix A to Appendix M, which provide detailed information. Three of them (Appendix C, D, E) are devoted to symbols, graphs, and figures (separately, and in that order). There is an appendix on reliability-based maintenance and another with case histories (including black and white photos).

WESCO, a leader in business distribution to business, logistics services, and supply chain solutions, has announced the results of a new survey conducted in partnership with the International Electrical Safety Corporation (ESFI) to explore how connected safety solutions and modern changes in NFPA 70B can be: the standard for maintenance of electrical equipment to improve safety between facilities, and to determine where improvements can be done. The poll poll, conducted in August 2024, included 200 industries safety specialists including manufacturing, construction, health care and more.

The effect of safety solutions on safety in the workplace

One of the main causes of deaths and injuries in the United States. More than 80 % of the respondents – all of whom are responsible for safety in the workplace – consider the electrical risks one of the initial safety concerns. Dependence on connected safety solutions – from video analyzes to wearable devices, and robots to safety management programs – has proven that it helps to control the risks of the workplace and mitigate it as 95 % of the respondents are a decrease in the workplace injuries since the implementation of connected safety solutions.

Meanwhile, 78 % of the respondents in the survey stated that safety solutions are significantly connected or a significant improvement in their workplace. Among those who have not yet fulfilled the connected safety solutions, approximately 80 % reported that they were thinking about this and cited the sensors and machine sensors among their supreme choices.

Explore NFPA 70B adoption and industry effect

The new survey also sought to learn more about the NFPA 70B effect, which provides official guidelines for how the facilities meet the electrical maintenance needs of their equipment and construction operations. Recently provides “mandatory”, the industry standard is a fixed set of guidelines on electrical maintenance through installations.

In a recent common article with Wesco and ESFI to highlight the changes on NFPA 70B, authors note that organizations that depend on safety solutions today are in a better position not only to meet the requirements of NFPA 70b but also enhance the integrity of the total facility. According to the survey results, 87 % of the respondents reported that they had already adopted NFPA 70B. 79 % of these respondents said that NFPA 70B is highly improved or large electrical safety in their workplace. While most of the respondents did not face any challenges with the adoption (73 %), some respondents noted that training, lack of education and cultural adoption were hindering death.

A lynchpin safety services for success

It should be noted that 80 % of the respondents in the survey stated that they manage a safety safety and work environments, highlighting the need for safety management services to help assess and address critical safety challenges and meet the continuous industry requirements. In partnership with accredited safety professionals and international companies such as WESCO, institutions are enabled to improve productivity, increase profitability and reduce risks through custom safety programs and training comprehensive employees.

In the field of occupational safety, where potential risks loom large, ensuring worker well-being is crucial. However, simply complying with NFPA 70E standards is not enough; Comprehensive training is essential to understand its importance and ensure its effective implementation. So, what exactly is the purpose of NFPA 70E training?

Understanding NFPA 70E

NFPA 70E, developed by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), provides guidelines for electrical safety in the workplace. It addresses the risks associated with electrical hazards and identifies safety measures to mitigate them. These hazards include electric shock, arc flash, and arc blast, all of which can result in serious injury or death if proper precautions are not taken.

Purpose of NFPA 70E Training

Promoting Awareness: NFPA 70E training increases awareness about electrical hazards and their potential consequences. Many workers may not fully understand the risks posed by electricity or the specific safety procedures required to mitigate these risks. Training courses help bridge this knowledge gap, ensuring employees understand the risks they face and the importance of adhering to safety protocols. Compliance: Compliance with NFPA 70E standards is not just about following regulations, it is also about protecting lives. Training ensures that employees understand the requirements set forth in the standard and how to implement them effectively. This helps organizations avoid fines and penalties and, most importantly, reduces the likelihood of accidents and injuries. Hazard Assessment: NFPA 70E training provides workers with the knowledge and skills necessary to evaluate electrical hazards in their work environment. Employees can make informed decisions about carrying out their jobs safely by understanding the factors that contribute to arc flash incidents and ways to evaluate risk levels. Safe Work Practices: Training emphasizes adopting safe practices when working with or around electrical equipment. This includes procedures for deactivating equipment, using personal protective equipment (PPE), implementing lockout/lockout (LOTO) measures, and maintaining a safe work area. By embedding these practices into daily operations, organizations can reduce the likelihood of accidents and injuries. Preparing for emergencies: Despite all precautions, accidents can still happen. NFPA 70E training prepares workers to respond effectively during an electrical incident. This includes knowing how to extinguish electrical fires, provide first aid to injured colleagues, and evacuate the area safely. Taking quick and appropriate action can mean the difference between minor accidents and catastrophic outcomes.
