<p>Wait, the US tax credit for electric vehicles is over, right? What do I do by putting it in the title now?</p>
<p>Well, a month ago, we wrote about some news that broke before the US EV tax credit expired. Ford and GM have figured out a loophole to primarily use the tax credit after the third quarter. They were essentially selling their cars to themselves before the deadline, scoring the tax credit, and then they would be able to lease those cars at discounted rates.</p>
<p>At the time, I wrote the following regarding Tesla: &#8220;Now, what about Tesla? Tesla doesn&#8217;t have separate dealers. So, Tesla presumably couldn&#8217;t take advantage of this loophole. There&#8217;s no clear network of dealers who are independent partners of the electric car company and can enter into a binding written contract with the company. Unless I&#8217;m missing something, it looks like Tesla will lose out here and suffer competitively from the loophole.&#8221; This may in fact be the case and Tesla is simply trying to find a creative way to rally support in this difficult time. But here&#8217;s the email from Tesla that made me wonder about this again:</p>
<h3 style="padding-left: 40px;">Leasing has its benefits</h3>
<p><img fetchpriority="high" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-362678" src="https://cleantechnica.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/Tesla-lease-now-buy-later.jpg" alt="" width="700" height="585" srcset="https://cleantechnica.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/Tesla-lease-now-buy-later.jpg 700w, https://cleantechnica.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/Tesla-lease-now-buy-later-400x334.jpg 400w" sizes="(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px"/></p>
<p style="padding-left: 40px;">When you lease, you&#8217;ll be able to use all the features that make driving Tesla cars so fun – from Tesla Arcade to driving modes to full self-driving (supervised).¹ And at the end of the lease, you can buy your Tesla outright.²</p>
<p style="padding-left: 40px;">Rental rates will increase by up to $80, request and apply by November 4, 2025 to qualify.³</p>
<p>Note there that rental prices will rise soon. Why? Are you running out of Teslas that you can somehow register before October 1st and get the tax credit? Or is it the high costs that impose this?</p>
<p>Whatever happens, Tesla is now offering and pushing something it hasn&#8217;t offered for a long time &#8211; lease takeovers. Maybe it&#8217;s that simple &#8211; the company is trying to stimulate sales, so it&#8217;s highlighting something that many may not know, which is that they can lease a Tesla and then buy that car at the end of the lease.</p>
<p>As a final point, intuitively, the value of that car will be higher now than the car was worth at the end of its lease a month ago, because there is no longer a $7,500 tax credit to reduce the cost of the new Tesla. This will help Tesla. Instead of being able to sell a car for $25,000 at the end of the lease, as a hypothetical example, maybe she could sell that car for $30,000 or $32,500 to the lessee. Increasing the value of a car after its lease expires is a clear benefit for Tesla, and there is no easier way to sell it without additional costs (transportation, cleaning and inspection, auction, etc.) than selling it to a lessee.</p>
<p>Any other thoughts on this? Will the percentage of Tesla sales that are leases increase in the fourth quarter? Historically, this is a very low percentage for Tesla compared to other automakers.</p>

<p>&#8220;It is certain that (changes) will include job loss in our team. &#8220;I tell you that you deserve transparency and truth &#8211; even if this fact is uncomfortable.&#8221;</p>

<p>Now, etheridge says that tax credit loss is likely to mean demobilization 50 to 55 of his workers. He called for the elimination of residential tax credits &#8220;bait and switch&#8221;.</p>
<p>He said: &#8220;I made a decision that he is an employee to remove a loan from my grandmother to buy in my work and put my home on the line&#8221; due to the stability of tax credits. He said he will now defend ways to diversify his work.</p>
<p>&#8220;If you need money points from Washington to make your business viable, then it may not be at work in the first place,&#8221; said Adam Michel, Director of Tax Policy Studies at the Kato Institute, a liberation research tank.</p>
<p>Michel said that he doubts that many clean energy companies will get out of work, but &#8220;I think they will be right in size in the market and that the people who work with them will find better jobs and more stable functions in viable industries and do not require billions of dollars in federal support.&#8221;</p>

<p>Even before the discussion of the draft law, E2 experts said in May that $ 14 billion of clean energy investments throughout the country have been postponed or canceled this year.</p>
<p>The draft law, which was passed on Tuesday, removes a tax on some winds and solar energy that was proposed in a previous issuance and gives projects on the benefit of some time to start construction before getting rid of these tax credits.</p>
<p>Carl Stopka, a rally -based NC Solar president, who employs about 100 people, said that the Senate Bill reduced the impact on commercial projects &#8220;with the destruction of the residential part of tax credits.&#8221; Nearly 85 % of his work is residential work.</p>

<p>Stupka said if the draft law becomes a law, companies will rush to end the largest possible number of solar functions before the credit ends. He was expected to rest half his employees, with &#8220;hanging&#8221; job losses elsewhere.</p>

<p>President-elect Donald Trump has pledged to eliminate tax breaks on electric cars under the inflation-reducing law, but the move is getting surprising support from his new campaign financier Elon Musk. But a new study from J.D. Power suggests Tesla&#8217;s sales would actually take a hit if those credits disappeared.</p>
<p>The latest E-Vision Intelligence report from the auto industry marketing research firm has some great new data on which automakers have benefited the most from the tax credits, which cut up to $7,500 off the purchase or lease price of a new electric vehicle if certain conditions are met. . Biggest winners: Volkswagen, Chevrolet, and Tesla, in that order. </p>
<p>“Among all electric vehicle purchasers, tax credits and incentive programs are the most frequently chosen reason for purchase among Volkswagen (81%), Chevrolet (77%), and Tesla (72%) buyers,” the study said. The report was based on a survey of new car buyers but interestingly does not include Tesla Cybertruck, Polestar and Rivian owners. </p>
<p>To qualify for EV tax credits, generally, EVs and their batteries must be manufactured in North America, where the IRA aims to stimulate domestic production. </p>
<p>According to the survey, the “luxury segment” &#8211; which includes all Tesla models &#8211; benefited the most from tax breaks. While this plays into criticism that tax money helps wealthier people buy more expensive cars, it also makes sense; Electric cars are currently still more expensive than their gas-powered counterparts, and cheaper, more popular models are only just starting to make their debut after years of being limited to the higher end of things. In the “premium” segment, “64% of EV owners say that tax credits and other incentives influenced their purchase decision. <p>So, which buyers were least motivated by EV tax credits? According to JD Power, these will be Toyota, Hyundai and Kia, which is a really interesting result. None of the Asian automakers build their electric vehicles in America (although that is now changing with the new Kia EV9, Hyundai Ioniq 5 and others) and so they are not eligible for tax credits unless they are leased.
